Description
INTRODUCTION (1) When thinking about social class and inequality, the theme for this symposium publication, it is important to consider not only the magnitudes and changes in inequality but the determinants of such phenomena as well. The focus of this paper is specifically on income inequality in the United States. This issue will first be briefly examined from a national, state and international perspective. Following this brief review, a basic model of analysis is presented including a description of the data used in the analysis. The author utilizes a type of regression analysis that takes advantage of variations that are present at the sub-national level (states) in the dependent and independent variables. The paper then proceeds to a presentation of the results from estimations applying the regression model to two sets of independent variables. Finally the paper concludes with some possible generalizations and their public policy implications.
